REVIEWS AND QUOTES

“The story is classic horror movie in graphic novel form, the way it should be done. Really creepy, moody and occasionally gut-wrenching horrific it does remind you of all the good stuff in Evil Dead movies – indeed the book could be a companion piece to the Evil Dead series. But there are somber moments too and chills that creep under you skin… Surprisingly the more tender moments, and the character interactions aren’t an afterthought. Relations and emotions are handled with equal aplomb and makes this book a must read and already a personal favorite of mine.” – Peter Bergting (The Portent, Crysis, Dark Sun, Strange Girl)

“A ghost story that will make your blood run cold.” — ComicMonsters.com -http://www.comicmonsters.com/reviews-314-The_Evil_Tree_GN.html

“Hendrix and Thollin sold me. Their tale of a young couple inadvertently awakening Something Very Evil may not be innovative, but I have a soft spot for classic tropes done well, and Mr. Hendrix rang enough changes on the formula that I was never bored. As a haunted house story, The Evil Tree is genuinely haunting… even scary… I was especially impressed with Mr. Thollin’s ability to craft and stage comics layouts that were actually frightening and surprising… In a way it’s almost more immersive– the jagged, simple style of the art helps put across the emotional part of the story. And when the art is that well-suited to the story, that’s my definition of good.” – Greg Hatcher, Comic Book Resources.com - http://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/2012/06/03/weekend-with-the-review-pile/

“The Evil Tree is exactly what a classic ghost story should be, Hendrix and Thollin capture all the elements of the genre with stunning execution. This is a perfect Halloween tale that’s bound to send shivers down your spine.” – Lonnie Nadler, Bloody-Disgusting.com - http://bloody-disgusting.com/news/3146805/preview-arcana-set-to-release-the-evil-tree-in-time-for-halloween/

“If THE EVIL DEAD was a ghost story told as a beautifully illustrated graphic novel, it would be THE EVIL TREE. If you’re a fan of horror comics, you owe it to yourself to check out this book!” – Dirk Manning (writer of NIGHTMARE WORLD and TALES OF MR. RHEE)

“A stark, powerful ghost story told with real verve and conviction.” – Mike Carey (UNWRITTEN, THE DEVIL YOU KNOW)

“Horror comics are hard to pull off… A lot of them just aren’t scary. The Evil Tree, though, works because it’s more about getting invested in the stakes. Erik Hendrix invests a lot of time in making these characters distinct and grounded: these are all people you believe are friends through work, pitching in to help out, making fun of each other, in close relationships… It’s a great horror book… and worth checking out.” – Dan Seitz – GammaSquad.com – http://gammasquad.uproxx.com/2012/06/the-comic-you-need-to-read-this-week-the-evil-tree-1

“The Evil Tree stands shoulder to shoulder with the best out there. This is a comic about a group of friends surrounded by a living ghost story and it will scare the hell out of you.” – Geeks of Doom -http://www.geeksofdoom.com/2012/10/15/comic-review-the-evil-tree/

“If you, like me, are a fan of horror movies, but horror comic books have left you wanting, The Evil Tree is the perfect remedy.” – Word of the Nerd -http://www.wordofthenerdonline.com/sneak-peek-the-evil-tree-from-arcana/

“Arcana’s tribute to the moodier slasher movies works because of a mixture of good writing that lets us get to know the characters before they start getting picked off and unique art by Daniel Thollin that can swing between the conventional and the disturbing in a heartbeat. It’s a fairly conventional haunted house story, but a very well told one, nonetheless.” – Dan Seitz – GammaSquad.com - http://www.uproxx.com/gammasquad/2012/10/five-recent-and-great-horror-comics-for-halloween/

The Inventor is the story of how one man stood against the goliaths of industry and changed the world with nothing but his mind, passion, and vision for a better humanity. At the end of the 19th century, during a time when inventors were known as wizards and corporations considered their kingdoms, emerged an extraordinary league of gentlemen who shaped the modern world with their minds, money and machines. Thomas Edison, George Westinghouse, J.P. Morgan, Guglielmo Marconi, Mark Twain, Lord Kelvin, Swami Vivekananda and others stood at the helm of the ship as the perfect storm was approaching. At the eye of the storm stood TESLA, a mystic inventor whose genius bordered insanity as he blurred the lines between magic and science. His ideas and inventions were so progressive that he catalyzed the second industrial revolution giving birth to the Electrical Era. Yet despite his genius, passion and impact on humanity, his on-going battle with Edison allowed others to make great fortunes on his inventions leaving him penniless, alone and forgotten…until now.

DAVID MURDOCH – THE INTERVIEW

David Murdoch is an independent, freelance artist and writer, whose work has been produced for venues such as Sideshow Collectibles, Satellite Soda, Ashcan Press, and others. He is the
creator, writer, and illustrator of the graphic novel Lucas, recently released through Arcana Studio. You can read more about Lucas and read an extended preview of the book here – http://arcana.com/view_issue.php?id=391.

1.) What can you tell us about the Lucas GN? Easiest part about makingit, and hardest part?

I don’t really know that there was an easiest part about it. I guess between the writing and illustration, the writing definitely came a lot easier by comparison. When I finally sat down with this concept and a blank page I just let myself start to explore each step of the story, as an observer in a way. I had these characters and scenarios in my mind, my goal was to try and sort out that mess by writing it down rather than drawing it out, kind of carving it out of my imagination. I enjoyed the process, and allowed myself the same freedom I do when illustrating.

When I’m working on an image, I always have an idea of the finished product when I start but allow a good deal of room for chance, random changes. Intuition. If the idea I started with moves in a different direction and it’s working better than that’s where I’ll go, even if it takes me a thousand miles from where I’d planned on going. Coincidentally, working like this while writing stripped me of that liberty to some degree when I began the illustration.

2.) What comics or characters did you grow up on? Indie Comics or Superhero.

Honestly I grew up on cartoons and movies, back in the days when Saturday mornings meant something special to a child, more than comics. The comics came later. The big draw for me was anything with monsters. Hanna-Barbera spurred my early imagination more than anything else, hands down. The first big push towards the comic shop came from Wes Craven’s Swamp Thing and The Incredible Hulk television series. These were two characters that, for me, represented an embodiment of power that was both essential and terrifying; I could cheer for the monster. But combing through the racks as a kid I didn’t come across anything that really grabbed me the same way. I went in looking for comic books and I’d leave with Fangoria.

3.) Who are your inspirations for writing?

When I’m writing I dig around for a persona, a demeanor. A tone. I don’t know how much sense it makes but I get myself in to the mindset of who I think can best narrate the thoughts or ideas in my head. The inspiration I look for is largely relative to what I’m writing; finding that perspective is key. With Lucas I drew from a fly on the wall. I wanted to tell the story with a mild case of indifference, apathy.

As far as a specific writer that’s inspired me, Chuck Palahniuk. I read his book Lullaby some time ago, sitting fixed behind it with a s***-eating grin, from cover to cover in about three days. Everything seemed to just come off the pages so effortlessly. Poetic almost. Anyways, I poured through his work having never read anything like it. His writing has remained a pretty static inspiration. The effect of it is lasting.

4.) When faced with potential writers block, what cures or remedies do you use?

Noise. Noise, and noise, and more noise. I’ll end up spending too much time staring in to the blank, mumbling to myself, reading what I’ve written over and over in hopes of the right wording somehow finding its way out. Once that brings me to the point that breaking something just seems like the right thing to do, I turn to noise. Music, movies, whatever. All on at once, all too loud. It’s so distracting that I can’t focus on the task at hand and loose my place. Then I get to walk away for a little bit. It’s like hitting the reset button.

5.) Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

I feel like this is the part where I should lean on some relatively inspirational quote that epitomizes what I believe in, at least a general sense. I don’t have one. Do what you do. Find your strengths and understand them. Don’t find a way to cater to what you think any particular niche is asking for, carve your own if you have to. You’re the only one that’s going to fill your shoes. I guess that’s about all I have for that one.

6.) Were there a lot of changes on Lucas from time of inception to finished product?

Yes. The book, as I’d originally planned it, was going to be an art-book of sorts. Various artists doing pin-up style work based on experts from the story. The story itself was lengthier as well. I’d written perspectives, or insights maybe, from Lucas’ point of view that were juxtaposed with the narrative. His origin had been written in as well. It (the project) just didn’t work out. After that I thought maybe I should just trim the story way down and try to submit it for an anthology type format. Again, didn’t happen. After leaving it on the back burner for too long I just said to myself, well, I used the “F” word. Twice I think.

I ended up deciding to tackle the entire book on my own. I’d originally started designing it around a candid aesthetic, something of akin to John Doe’s diaries in SE7EN. It just became too redundant, so I opted for a more “sophisticated” look which again didn’t work out too well. I ended up a little in between the two, leaning towards the latter. I also went back through everything I’d written and thought the best thing to do was just trim down the longer version of the story so that what I’d have is an introduction that would bring Lucas to readers in a way that would hopefully leave them feeling blindsided, wanting more.

7.) Do you have immediate plans to expand the Lucas universe? Introduce more characters?

Absolutely. I have four other stories written, one of which is his origin. Lucas’ inception is my love of horror and disdain for its cliché, and I’ve written out a lot of other characters waiting to be
terrorized by Lucas. So yes, given the chance there’s certainly room for expansion.

8.) Do you have any other projects that you’re tied up in at the moment? If so, are they like Lucas or a different breed altogether?

I do, actually. There’s a fantasy piece I’m working on with another artist that’s nothing like Lucas. An “all-ages” kind of tale but also definitely not anything conventional in its presentation or how it’s been written; very surreal. This one is titled Jet Boy Victory: Rocket Hero.

There’s another story I’ve written, that, I supposed is “like” Lucas as in, it’s a very dark tale. I haven’t titled it but the story is about pain. It’s an introspective commentary. A lot more personal than Lucas. It’s buckling under fears and paranoia with brutal, finite results. This particular project is pretty ambitious.

9.) And finally, is there anything you’d like our readers to know about Lucas?

This is an unconventional graphic novel that’s designed to get in to your head. It’s a good read. It’s straight forward. Pick it up, enjoy it. For every copy of Lucas that’s sold, a devil gets its wings. If anyone wants to follow the book, its reviews, or anything else going on with it (or any other projects) just like my page on Facebook and you’ll get the updates.
