Arcana chats with Bruce Brown, Howard Lovecraft and the Three Kingdoms creator!
A: Where are you from?
B: I am originally from Chicago.
A: Where do you live currently?
B: In a house.
A:What is your favorite local comic shop?
B: That is a tough one because I am lucky enough to live in a town where there are three great comic shops. Each one of them has very cool things about them and they all have been supportive of me and my work.
A: What can you tell us about your all ages Lovecraft series (Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom, Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom, Howard Lovecraft and the Kingdom of Madness)?
B: It is a very unique series that weaves real life parts of HP Lovecraft’s life along with characters and stories from his written work. Also, just because it is a book for children, doesn’t mean that adults wouldn’t like it! I think Lovecraft fans enjoy it because it is such a unique take on Lovecraft, but in the end, it is accessible to people who have never heard of Lovecraft at all; it’s just a fun ride.
A: How did you come up with Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom (an all ages Lovecraft series)?
B: I wrote a short story for Arcana’s Velvet Rope anthology and it took place when Lovecraft’s father suffered a mental breakdown; which actually happened in real life. I placed a young Howard in that moment when it happened and added a twist. After the story was published,I simply couldn’t let go of the idea of a young Howard and started thinking of a story which to place him in and it just took off from there.
A: How long have you been a Lovecraft fan?
B: For about seven or eight years now.
A: Do you think H.P. would approve of your Howard books?
B: Absolutely! He was so supportive of other writers and also encouraged them to add to the mythos he created. I think he would be amused to see himself, as a child, side by side with his characters interacting.
A: What is your favorite Lovecraft story?
B: That is a tough one, but I would have to say Shadow over innsmouth. It is just so eerie and tense; I love it!
A: Have you been to any of the Lovecraft monuments (his house, his tombstone, Lovecraft memorial square) in Providence?
B: No, but I really would love to go.
A: What are you currently working on?
B: I am finishing up Herbert West; Astounding Tales in Medical Malpractice. It is another all ages Lovecraft book. This time it is Lovecraft’s ReAnimator. I cannot wait for people to read it!
A: It was just Howard’s Birthday (August 20th) if you could have get him any gift what would you get him?
B: Honestly, I would give him articles and books showing him what an impact he had. He passed on impoverished and I am sure thinking his writing didn’t achieve anything. So, I would give him gifts that showed him how much impact he actually made with his work.
A: Are you going to be doing any appearances or signings in the near future?
B: It’s pretty rare when I do that anymore. I have done two signings and always thought it was strange that someone wanted me to sign something other than a credit card receipt! Ha!
A:How can fans get in touch with you?
B: They can follow or write me on Twitter at @brucebrown33.
